CASE... MAMAI LUCILLE WILLIAMS EVICTED FROM HER TRADITIONAL HOMELAND BY MINERS... IN FEAR OF HER LIFE.
6th of February 2019, was the day Mamai Lucille Williams was given to move from her home on Karisparu's titled lands. On my way to Paramakatoi I flew over her place and couldn't help but wonder how the very people who we helped along the way would turn back to destroy us. Back in the days when the pork-knockers (pan miners) came in to the area, it was Mamai who helped them with food when they ran out. They respected each others' space and lived happily until greed stepped in. Speaking with the toshao of Karisparu at the last North Pakaraimas District Council (NPDC) Meeting, I learnt that Mamai has since moved in with her grandchild for fear of her life. Several reports were made to various authorities including to Guyana's Ministers of the government hoping that something could have been done. To my knowledge, up to the writing of this post nothing has been done. At the last NPDC meeting the issue was discussed and it was agreed that there need to be urgent intervention to save Mamai's home. Mamai Lucille Williams deserves to have her rights to enjoy her old age in her home like anyone else. As a matter of fact, it is enshrined in the laws of Guyana. Section 111 of the Mining Act clearly states " For the purposes of this Act, all land occupied or used by Amerindian communities and all land necessary for the quiet enjoyment by the Amerindians of any Amerindian settlements, shall be deemed to be lawfully occupied by them" All Mamai needs is to enjoy her old age in her home, That is all!!!
